Public Engagement "Aspirational Statement",
submitted by Mark Jacobs, July 28, 2008
The intent of this statement is to capture the purpose of our public engagement process (feel free to edit)…
Minnesota
(Lake States) forests provide economic, social, and environmental benefits to society; such as wood products, outdoor recreation, clean water, and carbon storage. The public’s understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of these forest values will be critical to the future maintenance and perpetuation of healthy and productive forestland in our State (region).

Gentleman – Thank you for giving me the opportunity to take part in today’s call. It was helpful. Here are some notes to frame the two actionable items below. I’m not sure they are exactly on point but hopefully helpful.
- The PE Team will engage the ProTour members to develop an ‘aspirational’ statement that everyone can agree upon.
- This statement would function as the central message for public engagement efforts (e.g. media campaigns, policy initiatives) following the ProTour
- Once such a statement is agreed upon, the PE Team would shift its focus to development of a public engagement strategy that would be implemented following the ProTour
The Statement
I tried to locate the document I mentioned on our call to no avail. However the following graphic will give you a sense of how it was constructed not just as a statement but also as the centerpiece of a public engagement effort. The central statement ‘Water is Life’
was our snappy statement. Then we had four core messages that focused on the topic areas we wanted to focus our efforts on. We decided on these based on the audiences that we needed to engage such as parents, tourist focuses businesses, hunters, hikers and environmentalists. We then crafted different educational resources (e.g. fact sheets, slideshows) and engagement opportunities (e.g. marches, lobby days, classroom school presentations, commissioning of studies) to push the agenda. I hope some of this makes sense and is helpful.
Online Engagement Scenario – Here is one way we could take action to engage the ProTour group once you have a draft statement developed. Just food for thought.
